Roozz 브라우저 플러그인은 윈도우와 리눅스에서 바이너리 프로그램을 구동하게 해주는 미들웨어 솔루션입니다. 파이어폭스, 크롬, 오페라 등의 브라우저에 플래시나 실버라이트처럼 Roozz 플러그인을 설치하면 Roozz에서 작동하게끔 컨버팅 된 포토스케이프나 토탈커맨더 등의 프로그램과 몇몇 게임을 데스크탑 설치와 상관 없이 브라우저에서 바로 실행할 수 있습니다. (시연 가능한 모든 프로그램과 게임은 Demo 페이지에서 확인할 수 있습니다.)
일단 플러그인을 통해 로컬에 패키지를 다운로드 받고 브라우저에서 실행하는 방식이라 엄밀한 의미의 클라우드 컴퓨팅과는 거리가 있지만 무엇보다 플랫폼 제약 없이 어느 브라우저에서나 기존의 데스크탑 전용 프로그램을 실행할 수 있다는 점은 상당히 매력적인 것 같습니다. 파이어폭스에서 설치하고 잠깐 사용해봤지만 실행 속도도 꽤 괜찮게 나오는 편이고요.
다만 데스크탑 프로그램을 브라우저에서 구동하려면 별도의 컨버팅 작업이 필요한데 여기에서 Roozz의 수익모델이 포함되어 있습니다. 소프트웨어/게임 타이틀 당 일년에 $995을 차지하고 컨버팅 시간은 약 2일 정도 소요된다고 하네요. 또 컨버팅된 웹 애플리케이션에 엔드유저를 대상으로한 과금체계와 광고 등을 적용할 수 있도록 수익 공유 모델을 제시하고 있습니다. 엔드유저에게 자사 애플리케이션을 유연하게 배포하고 수익 모델을 다양화 하고 싶은 개발사들에게 좋은 선택이 될 수 있겠네요.
(여타 비슷한 기술들과의 비교 차트를 보면 하드웨어 제어, DRM 지원, 소스코드 보호, 개발툴 지원 등에서 많은 장점을 보여주고 있습니다.)
아무튼 아직까지는 다소 활용도가 떨어질지 몰라도 브라우저와 운영체제의 경계선이 점차 희미해지고 기존 애플리케이션과의 호환성을 고려해야 하는 시점에서는 정말로 각광받는 기술이 될지도 모르겠습니다. 엔드유저 입장에서 일단은 평소 즐겨 쓰던 포토스케이프를 브라우저 탭으로 불러올 수 있으니 좋군요.. ^_^

윈도우 환경에서야 웹브라우저에서 실행되는 것이 큰 잇점은 없겠지만

그렇죠. 운영체제를 넘어 브라우저가 플랫폼인 시대. 표준에 따라 웹브라우저에서 돌릴 수 있으면 어디에서나 사용 가능하니 진정한 클라우드 환경이 도래한다고 할 수 있겠죠.. ^^;
